Wi-Fi Alliance will prohibit certifying WPA alone device from January 1st ,2014

16th December, 2013 – The security roadmap and the transition of WPA TKIP to WPA2 CCMP have been discussed in Wi-Fi Alliance Security Marketing Task Group since the beginning of 2011.

 

The discussion was finalized and officially introduced by Wi-Fi ECN #283 in Nov, 2012. The new security combinations were then defined in CertifiedTM n test plan as following.

 

APUTs must support one of the following security combinations.

STAUTs must support one of the following security combinations.

1. WPA2 only (no WPA, no WEP, no open)

1.     WPA2 only (no WPA, no WEP, no open)

2. WPA2 and open (no WPA, no WEP)

2.     WPA2 and open (no WPA, no WEP)

3. WPA2, mixed mode WPA2/WPA (no WPA alone, no WEP, no open)

3.     WPA2, mixed mode WPA2/WPA (no WPA alone, no WEP, no open)

4. WPA2, mixed mode WPA2/WPA, WEP (no WPA alone, no open)

4.     WPA2, mixed mode WPA2/WPA, WEP (no WPA alone, no open)

5. WPA2, mixed mode WPA2/WPA, open  (no WPA alone, no WEP)

5.     WPA2, mixed mode WPA2/WPA, open  (no WPA alone, no WEP)

6. WPA2, mixed mode WPA2/WPA, WEP and open (no WPA alone)

6.     WPA2, mixed mode WPA2/WPA, WEP and open (no WPA alone)

 

7.     mixed mode WPA2/WPA (no WPA alone, no WEP, no open)

 

8.     mixed mode WPA2/WPA, WEP (no WPA alone, no open)

 

9.     mixed mode WPA2/WPA, WEP and open (no WPA alone)

The following security combinations are also allowed until January 1, 2014,,

but they will no longer be allowed from January 1, 2014.

1. WPA2, WPA, mixed mode WPA2/WPA (no WEP, no open)

1. WPA2, WPA, mixed mode WPA2/WPA (no WEP, no open)

2. WPA2, WPA, mixed mode WPA2/WPA, WEP (no open)

2. WPA2, WPA, mixed mode WPA2/WPA, WEP (no open)

3. WPA2, WPA, mixed mode WPA2/WPA, open (no WEP)

3. WPA2, WPA, mixed mode WPA2/WPA, open (no WEP)

4. WPA2, WPA, mixed mode WPA2/WPA, WEP and open

4. WPA2, WPA, mixed mode WPA2/WPA, WEP and open

 

 

Notices:

 

From January 1st , 2014, the WPA TKIP is no longer allowed for certification. For AP/STA products wishing to support legacy device, they can implement mixed mode with WPA/WPA2.
